Angela, that's a really long question to answer (I'm planning a book on the subject, tentatively titled "Zero to Freelance," so stay tuned for that) but I would start, if I were starting over today without any published writing experience, by writing a blog about the subject I really want to get paid to write about. That way you can at least direct potential clients/editors to a site that shows you can write and that you have personality, even if you don't have published clips.

And Stephanie, I think you're starting in the right place because you do have a blog where you write about things that interest you and your personality shines through. Maybe it's time to start querying magazines and websites on tech for moms? :)

I'm definitely a "work-for-myself" type. Now, if I could just figure out how to make money doing it...
My head is full of ideas (that are worth about $10). Hopefully, my blog will someday become a stream of income. We'll see.

How do you get started without a degree or any writing credits? I love to write and take pictures, I'm even pursuing a degree in photojournalism, but as far as freelancing goes, I'm not having any luck. Thanks.

I have to say, this is something I experienced in spades because I decided to start writing after my child was born, naively thinking that it could be done basically by wishing it could get done. I have two children, one 13 and one six, and didn't start producing anything worth mentioning until they were both in school. I couldn't quite articulate the anxiety and stress that is involved with trying to be a writer at home until this past year when I was in a class called Women in Literature and read Alice Munro's The Office. (Do wish it was available online; it is not). In it, Munro talks about getting an office outside of the home to write because "the woman is the home". Over the past year, there have been a couple of phrases that just seemed to save my sanity as a writer. This was one of them. It encapsulates the unique problem of being a writer at home. That's why I think The Awakening has such a dark end... Chopin was widowed with six children at home and wrote her books with the kids surrounding her on a lap desk in the living room. Really? Without air conditioning? I would have walked into a lake myself.

Thanks for the thorough review, Sarah. Yes, it's true that snail mail is yesterday's news. But I think most of the rest of the advice is still sound.

Under any circumstances, it's always refreshing to hear a thoughtful and intelligent review such as this one. Thanks again!

I find mind mapping very useful because it facilitates thinking process, boosts creativity and helps you be more organized. I use mind mapping software Seavus DropMind™ because of its functionalities and flexibility.
